Dear Santha,

Our School Final results have come today. By the grace of God, we both have passed. Had you been with me on this happy occasion, it would have been much merrier.  I am sure you too must be feeling the same. Our going together to the school, reading together, and playing together in the vacant space between our houses—all that is rolling before my eyes. Wonder, if those days would ever come again.

Santha, what are you planning to do? Go for higher education? Should I say about me? It’s a full stop for my education. Not that I don’t wish to study, but it may not work out. My family is already looking for alliance for my marriage.

Santha, I feel it has been ages since I saw you last. It is hardly ten days since we have moved out of that town. Yet, I feel as though ten months have since lapsed. True, I promised to write my new address immediately after reaching this place. Since we didn’t get a permanent house, I could not write to you. I am however giving the address below. Hereafter, please keep writing to this address. Do write a letter immediately.

Guntur,

Your dearest friend,
Bharati

My Dear Santha,

All these days, I have been contemplating to write this letter to you. But somehow I was a little inattentive. Indeed, it’s not even inattentiveness, but more of no respite. I know, if I say the truth, you would instantaneously taunt me. Nevertheless, I have settled down to write it today.

Santha! Though not sure of what, I feel like writing a lot to you. But unable to put all that into words. There would, perhaps, be no happier moments, Santha, in life than what I am enjoying right now. No doubt, everything here looks new for me. Yet I could see a sense of undefined bliss in it. True, there were occasions when I trembled with fear, being not sure of how to behave. By the bye, Santha, he is a nice person. What else do I need?

I shall be very happy if you would visit this place once. How is the Intermediate course? Studying well?

Don’t know when your wedding invitation will come….

Keep writing to the following address,

Tenali
1930

Your dearest friend,
Bharati Devi

Mrs. Gadiyaram Bharati Devi,
C/o. Sri Gadiyaram Gopala Rao Garu, BA BL,
Advocate, Tenali.

Dear Santha,

The life that has gone by appears to be a sweet dream. Whenever I recall the days that I had spent with you in our childhood, my mind goes blank. To think and heave a sigh, there is now yet another event … though it all happened two years back, it appears as though it had happened yesterday or the day before. It is, perhaps, to make one happy that memories of those happy moments are woven into one’s life. Whenever I remember him, my mind gets mutilated.

My son has got a job in Kakinada. We are going there. Henceforth keep writing letters to the following address:

Kakinada,
1953

Your childhood friend,
Bharatamma.

Gadiyaram Bharatamma,
C/o. Gadiyaram Raja Rao, B.Com.,
Andhra Bank,
Kakinada.

(Telugu Swatantra – 1953)
