A Review on Selected Stories’ of Tripuraneni Gopichand

‘Selected Stories’ of Tripuraneni Gopichand are Simple in writing and elegant in language, for every kind of reader, to read and feel. Most of the stories are depicted from family relations, as the base line. The woman Characters, in all the Stories are portrayed in a majestic way .

The feminine innocence of every age in every role is framed for the reader to pose questions to themselves, as definitely, every reader would identify herself in most of the roles in the stories.

Though the writer has written these stories in the 20th Century , they seem to be equally fresh to this day . The story line is typically from Andhra rural area and culture.

Although the stories have been translated into English, the nativity of the stories is not disturbed as the key words in the stories are also mentioned in Telugu. This is also taken care of, in the title of the stories , for example the word ‘ Mamakaram ‘ is more touchy when compared to ‘ Attachment’. The language and vocabulary have been Selected with utmost care so that the feel is not disturbed .

The story “Amma” is heartfelt . Small actions performed by mother, become regular habits for infants. Though they appear to be trivial in words, mean a lot to infants. ‘Lullaby’ is one such thing in the story. Very simple yet, heart warming. Mother ; thus occupies a prominent role in every child’s life.

The Story ‘ Fear ‘ ‘ Bhayam’ tells the reader about the fear of Responsibilities ; the Change when comes, shakes the normal routine life.

The Character Gopi is a typical example of people around, who fear to take up their share of load in life , but the young porter is the path maker for Gopi.

‘ Fallen women’ is a story which poses questions in almost all the minds of women. We might have come into 21st century , into a Cultured society but even to this day we do not discuss certain areas of life and one such area of life is focused in this story .Every thought which runs in the mind of ‘Akka’ is an example of the pain which the Community faces.

The change in the attitude of the community is described well. The thought process of ‘amma’ and ‘akka’ are characterized with a shift of period. The story ‘It could happen like this’ is a story about how India was before Independence.

The zamindari system of those days and the obedience of farmers to their Zamindar & his family is depicted clearly.

The character of Yasodarudu reminds of the revolution, in young blood before independence.

Rivalry – “spardha” :-

Human relations are precious. The bond between two gets linked only by Understanding. When a new member comes between blood related there is a rupture. Such is the relation between Venkayya and his son.

Suicide :

Death need not be physical. Sometimes when a person is unable to express one self and starts transforming, the original person is killed. This state where the original person is killed by thyself can also be called as ‘suicide’. The character of Savitramma is that kind! She dreamt as Savithri. But her dreams do not come true. So the transformation of Savithri to Savithramma is painted as suicide.

All in Wives :

Oh! What a story. It is one which every, typical Indian house wife has to read. Yes, a woman is so much engrossed in her marital life and her life partner that she completely forgets herself. By the time she realizes her life and rises from the enchanted world, she finds herself totally changed. The thought, that she is being neglected and being unwanted by her beloved one irritates her. At the same time her love for him overcomes her irritation and she consoles herself that all husbands are men who have grown up with innocence as they do not know how to express them selves. ‘Mamakaram’ the word itself rouses our emotions. This word does take a prominent priority in every life. Here the character ‘Jogayya mama’ has ‘Mamakaram’ for his fields where as his wife has ‘Mamakaram’ for her family. This mamakaram makes them forget every other thing except their ‘attachment! Even when they take their last breath they think of this ‘attachment’ or mamakaram.

Impoverishment :-

Anything which is not in our reach is sour! This is human psychology. The richness of the officer’s family makes the middle class ladies to talk negative about their luxuries and the pampering of their child.

Where there are riches, there are comforts, where there are Comforts there are smiles.

Conclusion:

Sri Tripuraneni Gopichand’s writings are consoling for every tender heart. All the characters in his stories are sketched with utmost care so that the delicacy in the feel is not disturbed. The story line for every story makes us feel that he has lived in a close knitted family with warm relations. Specially, the women characters make us feel how close he was to every relation in his family.
